Château d'Artigny (France)
Château d'Artigny is today a luxury hotel located in the heart of the Loire Valley close to Montbazon and is a beguiling portrait of is creator: grandiose, powerful, but lacking in provenance. As it vies with the great historic châteaux of the Loire, who would guess it is a 20th-century tribute to an upstart penniless Corsican orphan who became a newspaper proprietor, politician and perfumier. Like his scent, his fortunes evaporated as fast as he made his millions. His name was François Coty. The sadness is Coty never lived to see his concept completed. The hotel is within easy access of Châteaux Amboise, Chambord and Chenonceau, the city of Tours and the wineries of Vouvnay and Chinon.
Services
Coty himself; there is a trompe l'oeil fresco of the hotel's creator and his wife in the rotunda. The Château was always meant to be a palace of indulgence and, indeed everything in the 65-acre estate, including the 65 palatial bedrooms, formal gardens, opulent drawing and dining rooms, as well as the cellars that contain over 20,000 bottles of wine, are an apt memorial to a man of passion.
Location: The Loire Valley is home to magnificent countryside, vineyards, and, historic castles, such as the Châteaux Amboise, Chambord and Chenonceau. A short drive from the Château d'Artigny in Montbazon will take you the historic city of Tours. Tours is home to several museums, fine bars and restaurants and the impressive Tours cathedral. Guests at the Château d'Artigny might also like to make the short trip to the wineries of Vouvnay, where they can sample the vintage flavours of the Loire.
